An Irish artist based in London, Francis began with studies in animation. Going on to teach drawing from the nude figure and portraiture, he then pursued a training in traditional drawing and painting, later instructing at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy.
His training focussed on the nature of seeing, and of beauty, through the lens of a traditional sight-size atelier practice. This practice aspires towards recording the humanity of a sitter, executed to the scale of life, or the atmosphere of a setting, often to the scale at which it is observed.
The sketchbook is a tool always at his side. Inspired by animators and those who strive to capture an energy, an emotion, a record of life, from the world around them, he continues to investigate traditional masters of the drawing and painting craft, from Titian, through Rubens and Velázquez, to Sargent, to name but a few.
Translating those intangible impressions evoked from the observation of nature, Francis aims to communicate a visual expression of life.
The artist works on portraiture, figure work, landscapes, sketches and studies to commission, as well as teaching drawing and painting.
